Challenging myself

Mona 2

After many years of looking, study, and trying many different styles and techniques I challenged myself to paint a copy of a masterpiece and what better than the master of masterpieces, our Mona. I wanted to achieve a perfect copy, right down to the last detail. I recorded the time it took from the start of the first touch to the canvas to completion, this was 60 hours. Now behind the painting in the preparation side of things we probably had the same amount of time involved.

Once you have obtain the skills to paint, copying is pretty simple, the complicated bit is in producing an original, the artist must balance many naturally and simple things like, the flow, that bend, the glance, that posture, the light and dark, that shade, the reflected light, the colors, the suggestion, the path within, the twist that balance, the angle and many many more into a image of awe.
